Anybody out there with ideas for increasing the hp and torque of a 990 with a gm diesel? I know about swapping the stock injectors with n14 injectors and poss. going to larger valves. Anything else would be greatly appreciated.

There are a number of things you can do to increase the power. More things than I care to type. A lot of things by themselves won't do that much but in combination can add up to big difference. Most of the suggestions taken out of sequence are worthless. The real question is how much HP do you need and how much do you want to spend. I know a guy that spent $10,000 on his engine. He gets beat all the time. Until a couple of years ago we did not have a speed limit and it really was a HP contest. Now we have a 5 MPH speed limit and it's not that hard to get enough HP out of a 3-71 even for the 11,000 pound class. If you post more information I could give you a better idea of what you might do and in what sequence. What weight do you want to pull at? Is there speed limit? If so what is the speed limit? Is there an RPM limit? How much money do you want to spend? What has been done to the engine or are you going to rebuild the engine? Do you already have the high compression pistons. I can tell you this. If you are on a low budget just install 90 N series injectors. But if you want to make real power you will need the high compression 18.7 to 1 pistons. Without those pistons not much else works.

Change to an "N" series set of pistons and liners. Change to a four valve head. Use N60 or N70 injectors. The cheapest improvement swap/change is to get a set of 995 decals on it and turn the rpm up another 200 (990 - 1800 rpm rated, 995 - 2000 rpm rated). Make sure the supercharger is in good shape. Consider overdriving it and/or having it fitted with teflon sealing strips on the lobes.

For a short pull down the track but a petcock in the airbox drain and shut it off. You don't want to run it this way all the time as it allows condensed moisture to drain. Make sure your air cleaners are flowing good and not acting as a restriction. Make sure your exhaust is not appling backpressure on the motor. You might try advancing the cam. Add a turbo.

How much are you looking for and what are you trying to do?

A.P.

Thanks A.P. that helps alot.
This is going to be my first pulling tractor project. I'm not sure how much to look for in power, but someplace in the 100 to 120 hp range if not more. Also, what is a good way to increase air intake and decrease backpressure?
In this class, I will not be able to add a turbo and may not be able to increase the rpm too much.
Thank you for the help.

Just asking, have you converted it to a four valve engine?
