Oliver 99 water pump wick

On a 4cyl 99, there is an oil passage that goes vertically down from the top of the head, and then forward out the front, where a copper tube connects to the water pump to lube the oilite bushings by way of gravity. In the vertical portion of the passage, there is supposed to be a cotton wick tightly fit in to slow the oil flow. On our 99, the original wick is pretty shot, allowing too much oil, which runs out of the pump, onto the pulley, into the fan, and all over. My question is, does anyone know where I can get a new wick, or what I can use in its place? I considered replacing the oil line with a zerk fitting and greasing instead, but Im not sure that is the hot setup either. Thanks to all who can help.

You may be able to use a piece of lamp wick for an oil lamp. I agree with not using the zurk fitting. If you want to buy new, I've had good luck with Malbach in the Loudenville, Ohio area. They have the largest selection of Oliver used and new parts that I have ever found. The name is pronouced "may-balls". Good luck.

don't grease it, that wont work. just had my pump rebuilt because somebody had a zerk in it. grease won't go through the bushings like the oil does. i used a piece of cotton tube sock for my wick seems to work fine. don't pack it in to tight or the oil can't get through it, if it's to loose it won't hold oil back either.

I would have thought the wick is to filter the oil, not slow it down.
The pump bearings are lubricated from behind and the oil seeps through the oilite bushings.
They are always messy and this shows they are at least getting some lube. When I replaced the bearings on my 90 pump, I found the oil cavities were full up with sediment and this probably slowed the oil flow so much that it ran the bearings. Not sure whether the bearings would get enough lube with a grease, but it may if yours are running oil as you say. I would say keep it as it was designed. Regards, RAB

Go ahead with the grese zerk it will work fine. Every one I have seen has a greae zerk, I also use the grease zerk on mine.
