Oliver 88 needing LOTS of repair!

I have an old war horse 88 that has been used hard, abused and disrespected, not by me, but by previous owners. Actually, if the tractor didn't start and run so well, I would most likely part it out.

The engine is extremely strong, but the low range is gone, the PTO shaft has a gear spun and will not work, there is a definite knock from the transmission in road gear.

Some fool put so many thick welds on the wide front end, welding the top nuts, the worn out tie rods and the wrong length (welded) tie rods that are now made of rebar. Needless to say, it hardly steers at all.

The generator is out, the sheet metal mostly gone, the clutch works, but there is tons of noise and the sfaft wobbles almost violently. The brakes ae shot also, so as you can see, other than engine and tires, there is not much there.

I would be a fool to fix it. To get it back to a good usable tractor would take quite a bit of time, money and effort.

But, I have been called a fool before for lesser reasons, so I am considering repairing it slowly, one piece at a time.

Does any one have any suggestions as to what they would do in fixing up such a basket case?

The old tractor is still used quite a bit, so it is still earning its keep even with all of the problems. Olivers sure are tough!

I have restored an 88 RC about two years ago and it is the sharpest tractor I've ever seen. These tractors are very usfull and parts are getting to be more available every day. If you think you want to get into a job like that, it will be well worth it when you are done. Olivers look very sharp when you take the time to fix them up right. They are good pullers too. In my opinion an oliver is worth fixing up. They are pretty easy to work on too, from what I've done. If you need parts, and can't find a good used one, Korves Brothers have just about anything you will need. It may take some money to get yours back in shape but it'll be well worth it in the end.

Let me find a guys number around here. If your close to Western Tn or Ky he is in the corner and had an old 88 he was wanting to sell. I think the motor was locked up but most everything else was there.

I would start looking for a siezed 88 that you can put your engine in. You could probably find one quite reasonable and then even sell the wreck with a siezed engine to someone else for parts.

I would like to have that option rather than the siezed one looking for an engine.

My suggestion would be...ask yourself, How loyal to this tractor are you? and...How deep are your pockets? It sounds to me as if you might want to get all the work you can out of her and then retire her. At this point you basically have a good engine for another project, or you have one heck of an undertaking ahead of you. Good luck in what ever you decide.
