There is already a wealth of information archived and available for the use of anyone with a problem. Whacking in 'bumper' at the search facility at the top of the post listing page in the first instance would have revealed enough information to more than adequately explain the function of the bumper screw. There is at least one archived post which deals comprehensively with the whole governor operation/setting - not really any need to air it again, I feel.
Regards, RAB

On my 88 it keeps the engine from surgeing when it is under heavy pto load. (When the bumper screw is adjusted properly).

It doesn't seem to do anything on my 1550 no matter how it is adjusted. I'm trying to figure out the internal works of it without disassemly.

It's purpose is to limit surging. If the governor is properly adjusted, the bumper screw should have no effect. If the engine surges after the maximum no-load speed is set, then the bumper screw, which has to be backed out to set the no-load speed, can be adjusted to limit surging. The operator's manual covers proper adjustment.

I'm well aware of what the manual states. I would like to know just how it does this in regard to it's interaction with the internal works of the govenor.

I just answered that question for you. If you didn't understand it, read the book.

The bumper screw has a small spring that contacts the yoke on the inside to keep it from surging. If the screw does not have any effect the spring may have dropped off. As Ollie said to set max speed loosen the screw, to reset the screw turn it in about a quarter turn at a time until the surging stops. Hope this helps. Delbert

Thanks Delbert your reply was more in line with my question. Not having the govenor off or apart it was difficult to perceive the internal works as the manual or"THE BOOK" does not go that far.
