Shep,
I would like to built a Deere killer for a few local pulls here in Indiana. I was thinking of using an 88 with either a 354 Perkins, a 372 Perkins, or the Shep 5.9 Cummins conversion. This tractor will have to be built on a tight budget. Which engine would be the best for the least amount of money? Hopefully, the end result will be an ugly tractor with a lot of HP.
Thanks
Chris

I have never put a Cummins in an 88 before, so I am not exactly sure what all it will intail. I would think the conversion costs would be about the same for either engine, the cost of the actual engine will be the determining factor. The Cummins engines tend to be more pricy than the Perkins engines, but they convert a lot the same. You will still need the 1850 bell housing and you will need to do some serious cutting and building on the frame. I would tend to think the Cummins engine will be easier to put in the 88 than the Perkins, because of all the different parts you can put on the Cummins.

Also remember you are going from a 230 ci engine, I would assume to a 360 ci engine, and that is going to take up more space, so you are correct that this conversion may be ugly. Have fun and good luck.
