I just spent 5 hrs draining rearend & cleaning up arround PTO shaft & replacing PTO seal and dust packing on 550 Oliver. Put new transmission oil in and now I find out oil is leaking arround splines on output shaft.I got Shop manual out and it looks like I have a bad O Ring inside rearend. Question ?? anyone got a good FIX for this problem ? I don't want to tear down the rearend to fix this problem right now. Any Help or suggestions would be greatly apreciated & Thanks in advance.

Kenny,

First, double check the bearing retainer seal and make sure it was put on in the right direction and that it was not damaged when it was put back together. It could be that simple... If all is ok there:

If you have a shop manual, you should also have a description of how to remove the PTO drive shaft with out spliting the tractor, OR removing the hydraulic unit. It describes how to remove it by backing out the allen set screw in the PTO clutch through the inspection port under the belly of the tractor. You can then pull the shaft out the back after removing the bearing retainer... then replace that pesky o-ring.
WARNING: If you choose to use this method... When retightning the allen set screw(s) use LOCKTITE on it! If that screw(s) backs out on its own during operation, you will be splitting the tractor anyway to replace the PTO clutch plates and perhaps clutch lever parts! I have pictures from when I split my Super 55 as a result of that screw backing out! BTW, If your 550 doesn't already have two back to back set screws, but only a single one.. REPLACE it with the replacement pair. The pair works much better than the old single one.

You can get all the seals for this I got one a few months ago to atempt to take it apart to remove the pto shaft but it would not come out the back of the tractor it needs a clutch to so it will be worked over then

The mind goes away when you get older, but if the O-ring leaks and it seals the output shaft the O-ring has to be in side the shaft at the back of the other shaft. The first Super 55 tractors had a shaft that was 1-1/8 on one end and 1-3/8 on the other and I remember the o-ring being toward the back. My two cents worth right now, don't split it untill you look inside there. Maybe you can fish it out with a long o-ring pick.

Looks like you'll have to split it.I tried to send a more detailed reply but it would not go through.

Sorry but there is no quick fix that I'm aware of. Guess you'll have to split the tractor.Unfortunately the seals an O rings on these models leave a lot to be desired. That and the fact that it is almost impossible to lock the brakes from a sitting position are the two things I find undesirable about the Super 55 & 550. Seems most all the seals tend to leak, reminding me of the older Harley Davidsons that leaked like the devil also. They both have their many other endearing qualities though,I have one of each and have replaced my share of seals and wiped up after them, Ollie and Harley both. While it's split don't forget to check the PTO clutch.Good Luck RB. Just figured out why this did not post yesterday.I used the H word when describing the leak. Pretty sensitive site.

Thanks for your reply
I still think their has to be away to seal that leaky shaft up ??? If I come up with something I'll let every one know. PTO clutch and clutch good now.
Utill then I'm just going to add oil and clean up the mess later.

That O-ring seals the front of the sleeve which couples your PTO output shaft an the shaft that comes from the PTO clutch. By taking the hydraulic unit off and removing the pin from the sleeve and the bearing retainer on the outside of the tractor you should be able to pull the sleeve out of the front long shaft. You may need to support the front shaft so it does not move rearward. The O ring is under there.

Thanks for Information
Can I Lift Hydraulics off And up with Engine lift & not drain it ? or will I need to Drain that also ?

Do you think I can order that O-Ring or should I look for O-Ring asortments.

Engine lift will work fine. We used to use two people. Drain it first and put oil dry down. To drain it pump it out with the hydraulic pump. You can not get 100% of it out. I will try to find dimensions for the o-ring. Put new oil and filter along with a new gasket when you go back together, You will need to drain the final drive too.
