What problems are encountered when putting a gas engine from say an 880 or 1650 into a 770? I know the block is a bit longer so how does this affect the hollow tube and PTO shaft inside of it? Also can a gas motor from a 1800 or 1850 bolt right up in an 880? If the answer to both questions is yes then it sounds like you can swap any 6 cylinder Oliver you want ....or is it that simple?

You can swap the six cylinder Waukesha based engines but not (easily) the Perkins or Hercules motors. The seven main bearing 283/310 gas/diesel engines are the same length as the 88/1650 model four main bearing engines. These engines are roughly 1 1/2" longer than the 77, 770, 1550 engines. That means you will have to shorten the transmission coupling shaft by 1/2 that amount. The radiator will need to be moved forward by the same amount. The fuel tank will need to be moved back as well.

When evrything is finished it will fit very nicely. I've seen a 77 with a 310 gas and another with an 88 engine. Most people can't tell the difference even with the side panels off on the one with the 88 in it. Most pulling groups do not allow this swap. Something to keep in mind if you ever intend to pull it.

Regards,
