There seems to be a chattering noise coming from the clutch area of my 880 diesel. It also does not seem to want to go when it is put in gear. I do not know when the clutch was last replaced or when it was adjusted. Where is a good place to start? Thanks

With or without power booster?
Is the noise there all the time, if not when
Does the linkage have free travel?
Have you ever greased the throwout bearing. Explain a little more "does not want to go"

It has power booster. Have not greased the throw out bearing. The noise is there whenever the engine is running. When you put it in gear and let the clutch out, the tractor does not move ery well. I have just started worhing on this machine, It is my grandfathers and his memory of the maintenance is hazy at best. thanks

O. K. I am glad ajax asked if it had a Power Booster. I wish you would explain this does not go thing a little better I am guessing that when you put the tractor in gear and let out on the clutch it either hesitates or maybe does not move at all. Some food for though: Take both rear hood sides off and undo the cover on the power booster. 4 Bolts, one in each corner. Then get somebody to put it in first and see if the fins on the overcenter clutch keep rotating. Stand back so you do not get run over. Next you did not say, but when you tried this was the power booster in low range (handle back) or high range (Handle ahead) Does it make a difference. I am thinking four problem areas. Your tractor should have a spring loaded clutch drive disk, It may be broke, then the fins on the Overcenter clutch will not move. The low range sprag clutch in the power booster may be out. it will move with the Power booster handle ahead, but not with the handle back. Something major is wrong with the over center clutch, not real likely in my experiences. Or the snap ring on the transmission imput shaft and the two tapered bearings are out and the shifting collar does not catch the teeth on the gear especially in the low range gears. That is if you have the helical gear transmission/ Last three numbers of the serial number are 873. If you have a spur gear 880, scratch that idea.Send me a serial number and tell me what you find.

Drove it today and everything went well. It did not hesitate and pulled the mower just fine. The power booster is full forward, in fact we never move it aft. I will try to see what is going om in side there. Serial number is 116-364-873. That is frtom the front of the owners manual from the first owner. We are the second.

Lots of things can cause chatter but I'd adjust the linkage first. If that doesn't do it, you're going to have to pull it apart and see what's up. Usually it's worn but if not you'll have to look for some other cause.
