We have an 88 standard with the original 6v starting/charging system. I have been through the whole system, replacing the starter button, new 0 gauge cables, grounding right on the starter, new starter, battery. But it still doesnt like to start well. However, when I dropped in an 8v battery it starts pretty darn good, but the 6v system wont charge it. I know there is some way to get it to charge, but I dont know how. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Set the regulator up a little. To vharge 8 volt they have to be set up to a higher voltage.

This is 100% correct. However you may also need to move the adjustable brush to get the output you need. A voltmeter checks where you are at.

It takes 9.6v to charge an 8v battery. If you can get that, then yes, it would work. But it would be hard on any 6v lights.

I thought you would get a lot of feedback. First question: Do you have a voltmeter and feel comfortable using it?
Since you said the charging system is original, does it still have 3 brush generator? Have you had the cover off and looked in there. Does it have a Delco 790 regulator (last 3 digits) and have you ever had the cover off of it so you know what is in there should you want to proceed with this project? I hope you kept it positive ground.
What do you do with the tractor,in other words when you are using the tractor how long is the engine running at one time and at what speed. Have you taken any voltage drop tests on the starting circuit?
The last guy that asked me this and wanted to keep his 77 original looking I told to get a used unit off a 77 or 88 Diesel> that is the simple way to go, but too late for that now.

0 gauge cables? Never heard of them. Cable sizes go like this...

6ga -> 4ga -> 2ga -> 1/0 -> 2/0 -> 3/0 -> 4/0

in order from skinny to heavy.

For a 12v system, I use 1/0. For a 6v system, 2/0 is the minimum. Connections must be soldered, not just crimped. All terminals must be clean and shiny. Lots of other things can make an engine hard to start... compression, timing, water in gas, wrong mixture, incorrect choke setting, ignition system needing attention. Lots of speed isn't required to get them to start. Remember, in the gold old days, these things were started by hand.

I'd stick with the 6v setup and fix it but if you want to go with the 8v battery you can buy an 8v charger and keep it plugged in when the tractor is not in use.

1/0 cable is sometimes referred to as 0 gauge. the true rating system for cable is actually 0,00,000....etc with the 1/0, 2/0, 3/0 being an abbreviated format.
