I am wondering about a 88RC. I need a bigger tractor for a big heavy pto drive pull type combine. I want to know if this is a possible candidate. Like to know how much HP, Live p.t.o.?, 2 way hyd., thick heavy draw bar? There is one with a wide front, new front rubber half rears, loader, tire chains for $3,000. I haven't seen it. Says it's in good shape but you know how that goes sometimes. If it is a good tractor it wouldn't be bad cause I could use a loader anyhow. Give me the good the bad about it as well as prices that you have seen on them. I'm in a bind and don't know what to do.

The right way to approach this is... what is the hp requirement of the biggest implement you have or are likely to have? Then look only at tractors that exceed that requirement. 88RCs have only 29 hp I believe.

If you want a loader tractor, make sure it has power steering and that it works.

I used a Farmall M on a Massey Harris 60Pt combine. The draw bar bowed and that U piece sagged. The M is 40 Hp and it was maxed. I would say not overloaded but to it's limit. I have 2 JD 70 diesels but with the live pto on the 2 the draw bar would be to far out and break.

What is the source of your information? The book I have (Intertec) says 29hp for an 88RC.

I recommend that you throw the book away or at least cross that information out. I have one that says the Super 44/440 has the six cylinder 302 cube engine. I don't believe that one either. The higher numbers are right for PTO horsepower (Nebraska Tractor test).

What is your source? All the other ratings are correct so I'll assume it's 29 hp unless someone can show me an owner's manual that says otherwise.

From previous posts I thought you'ld worked at a dealership. Did you ever dyno one? After we worked on the engine we always dyno'ed everything that went out of our shop and weren't any of them that low. Our old '51 put out over 40 hp and hadn't been touched.

I agree. I never seen one with less than 50 Horse Power unless it still had the original 231 engine and then they will do 40 minimum. A later 88 with the disk brakes would make a decent loader tractor. Tell us more about the loader, What you want to do with it, How big a bucket, do you need float position, Does it neeed hydraulics to tilt the bucket, etc. It may be smart to use a seperate hydraulic system especially if your 88 has a very early Oliver hydraulic system.

At that time tractors were test on the Belt, not the PTO. Belt and PTO horse power are going to be the same for practical purposes. You also have observed and corrected horsepower so they (the ratings) are on the same page due to weather for simple terms.

I would like to comment on a few of the above posts. In 1948 Oliver printed and internal memo to their dealers comparing the 88 to the old Hart Parr #3 of 1903. oliver stated that the 88 delivered almost 29 drawbar horsepower and almost 38 on the belt and this was with the little 231 cid engine. That same year an 88 went to Nebraska, test # 388. On this test the 88 delivered nearly 42 belt hp and 37 hp an the drawbar. I think we need to note that pto horsepower was not considered in these tests.

Vern: What would it take to get a photo copy of that memo. E mail me on the Hart-Parr page and I will explain

That is more inline with I saw as a hp figure of 35/belt for my 77.
