I'm looking for some advice on how to paint a '47 old style 88 row crop. I have the color codes to use, but I don't know what color some of the parts were originally. Specifically, does anybody know what color the front cast iron wheel centers should be. I've seen them tractors painted red and painted green. Someone put a coat of red paint on the front wheels before we bought ours, so I don't know what the actual color was without blasting it off to look and see what color is underneath. Are the rear axles and hubs green as well? Also, how should I paint the center piece on the radiator. It looks to be red with the raised oliver letter yellow, but are all the raised stripes supposed to be yellow? I've seen them painted both ways. I also noticed some tractors with the indentations on hinged radiator cap cover being painted red. The tractor we have shows no sign of red paint anywhere on that piece. I did not know if that was right either. Thanks in advance for any help.

I read this with a little interest. When I started working for the dealership in the fall of 1960, the first tractor I worked on was an old style 88. I do not remember much about the sheet metal, but the rear hubs only had 2 U-bolts and they were red. I also think it had pressed steel front rims. There were some early 77 tractors around too with pressed stel rims and some were red and some were green

The rear hubs do indeed have only 2 u-bolts. I'm not totally sure whether my heavy cast front wheels are the correct color(green), however, I dont recall ever seeing the light hubs on an old style wide front. I cant imagine the original owner of my os 88 changing the front wheel centers so I'm thinking they might be correct. Maybe someone else can add to this. Mine is one of the later old styles, made in early '48 I believe.

On my os 88 the front wheel castings are green. The front rims are red. The rear axles and hubs are red. The nose center strip is green with red in all of the indented surfaces. The OLIVER lettering is yellow. The raditor flip cover is green with red indented grooves. If you want me to telephone your Dad , just let me know on here. I'm pretty sure I know you guys and we're not too far from each other. You could come and look at mine.
