I just bought a 550 oliver.I dont know much about it yet so Im reading everything I can to get up to date.I bought it to replace my Jubilee Ford.I really like this tractor the only complaint I have is the steering. Is this normal for a 550 to steer hard?

Sorry for the late reply. No, it should not steer abnormally hard but there are some common problems with the steering gear on these machines. (It will steer hard if there is a loader attached but I am presuming that there is not one installed.) First try to isolate the source by jacking up the front to take pressure off of the tires. It should turn smoothly from lock to lock. If you sense uneven pressure while turning, greater difficulty turning in one direction compared to the other, the steering shaft moving up or down when turning, or a crunching noise, suspect the bearings in the steering box. The top one often failed due to lube starvation. These are relatively easy to obtain and replace (get an I&T manual for the Super 55/550 that are often on ebay). And pray that the lower race is OK because it is a bear to remove if you have to. If none of these symptoms are present, disconnect the pitman arms from the steering box and try again (they are easier to remove than the tie rod ends). Also pivot the front wheels to see if it is the kingpin bushings. These bushings rarely go dry, they are made of a bronze alloy and are usually sloppy from wear and may turn too freely. Regarding steering box lubrication there is a great debate: gear oil was originally used but multipurpose grease is often substituted due to leaking at the pitman arm area. Most of the needed parts can be had from Maibach's in Ohio 330-939-4192, Rick's in Ohio 330-264-9720, or O'Brien Cty. Implement in Iowa 800-320-6224. Write to me if you need more help. Mike

Don't know, but check out king pins for wear, steering alignment (track), tyre pressures, correct tyre size and steering box (for wear and lube). Presumably it not power steering? - if it is there are loads more things to check out.

The steering gear box has return ball type of steering, it uses 90W gear lube. Grease will not lube the balls properly and it will steer hard. Delbert
