Guys/Gals,

I found an Oliver 55 at a pretty reasonable price, but don't know much about it. I currently have a Ford 9N. How does the Oliver compare in HP and functional options? Parts availability for normal maintenance and engine overhaul?

Any and all info would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance..... ..Tommy(MO)

Some time back, Tom was presented with facts on the Deere board. He tucked his tail between his legs, and wasn't heard from again.

You see, other than Nebraska Tests, he doesn't have proof, just stories and rumors.

As far as us Deere guys, we don't have to defend owning the best.

And what is your name little boy?How is that stock in mobil comming along?I new you werent to brite to start with because your defending deere on a oliver board but to dicount the Nebraska tractor test and put in your own misguided stories as facts is getting a little deep even for a John Deere fan.I just present the facts, facts your john Deere dealership and the Neb test back up!Again you cannot even pick apart one thing i stated below, just your typical uninformed John Deere fan doing what a manure spreader does best.

Since you got one response with misinformation: Oliver was purchased by White in 1960 ( White also purchased Cockshutt in 1962 and Minneapolis Moline in 1963). By the late 1960's White was consolodating the 3 lines and the other names were being phased out in favor of "White". Dies'l gave a good resposonse: the 55's are a nice little tractor. But like any older tractor, condition of the individual machine is important.

Oliver is the best tractor ever built, and you dont ever have to worry about buying parts, because they NEVER break. So the fact that the dealers are few and far between shouldn't be an issue.

Nomater what horsepower it is, it will outpull every single other tractor ever built, even the 4X4s.

It will get such good fuel economy, you will be able to do all the work to farm 160 acres, and only fill the tank once.

All in all, they are such good tractors, the company had to go under, because they couldnt sell enough of them.

Just ask Tom in you dont beleive all of this, he knows everything about everything.

Uh..never mind that guy-I guess you shouldn't have asked for ANY and ALL info-just usable stuff.

The little Oliver Super 55 is easy to get parts for at your dealer, and most typical parts are still available such as engine, hydraulics, and electrical. Transmission parts are available used, if not new. The Super 55 made 32.65 belt(PTO) horsepower, and 228.9 footpounds of torque, so you should notice quite a difference between it and your 9N. Plus you get a six speed transmission with a road gear, and an independent PTO, something you will really appreciate if you're using your 9N for PTO work now. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info fellas. Sounds like it might be what I'm looking for. Is there anything in particular to that model that I should look for before buying? I know the standard start it, run it, try hydraulics, check for exhaust smoke (white, black, blue) oil leaks and leaky seals. Anything else you can think of????

Thanks again..... .Tommy(MO)

I'd like to see you find a John Deere in the same style that does the same job as that Oliver. This same tractor made in the 1950's with live hydraulics, live pto, 3 point, utility stature, and even power steering on some.

A John Deere H or M, I think not.

Well to be fair, be glad John Deere had a industrial division that they could depend on when they couldn't depend on their agricultural division that was failing like the rest.

John Deere fans are just like their tractors hit and miss,to chicken to even post real names.Jd fans wont tell you that I.H. baled out J.D once.Or will the J.D fans show you the paper work that proves they get any kind of fuel economy. If J.D was so advanced why did it take them 5 years after oliver to come out with a semi mount plow?Or how long did it take to come out with front wheel assist?Or telescoping steering,or tilt steering?Or about in the older tractors how olivers pto is so much more efficent(sp) than the 2bangerJd,oh and how is the cost on repairing the JD pto?Or how the frame bends on the cheap Jd disc(before the 220)or how cheap Jd was when it came to using 4 bolt wheels when oliver was using 5 and 6.Or how on the Jd plows if you put MandW coulters on them the frame broke and twisted, that didnt happen on I.H and oliver plows.John Deere fans also dont like you to know that that Jd can not be used for grain drying because the pto in the 20 series wont get lubed and it will burn out.Or that 4230 got a factory recall for bad rings.true Jd has a good planter but a farmer designed it,kinze perfected it.And as for the new rotary combine they are so happy about, didnt two Illinois farmers design it 15 years ago and sold the idea to JD?Oh and finally how about that good corn picker Jd made how many championships did it win 0 thats right zero cause it shelled more than it picked, heck even A.C won one year!

If JD two-cylinder tractors were so great, how come they're no longer built? Simple, they were obsolete from the start and really obsolete at the very end. As far as Oliver's disappearance is concerned, economics is economics. Despite the company's outstanding products, the dealer network was never as extensive as Deere's (unfortunately) so many farmers purchased inferior JD machines just because the dealer was conveniently located nearby. This is the same reason AGCO is today having such a tough time, even though AGCO products are in so many ways better than JD competitors. For the 4430 with 10000 hours, I believe it. After all, it was Oliver who taught JD how to build an engine back in the late 50s when the first design work was being done on Deere's 10 series. So plaudits to Oliver for doing such a good job saving Deere again!!! And I know where there's a 1655 with 15000 hours on an untouched engine, a true testimony to the ruggedness of Oliver and White tractors.

Same reason MM are not being made. The company sold out sometimes for the bettor sometimes for the worse.sad thing about it white took three good companys and ended up with nothing. Why did Mack sell out,are they now not any good anymore because they sold out? What about new holland they sold out,or ford tractors,or cummings,or versital, why did peterbuilt sell out or kenworth?Companys are supposed to look out for the stock holders,White just droped the ball!

As I recall, some time back you spewed forth your so called facts about Deere and Company, and someone corrected your facts, and offered proof to back up these facts. I also recall, that you did not bother to refute this.

Remember, rumors are rumors and facts can be proven. Show us some proof that IH bailed out Deere and Company. I recall hearing stories about Deere and Company bailing out IH, because Deere was worried that if IH went under, that the government would regulate the farm equipment buisness. Again, this is a story that I can not proove, just as I suspect you can not proove that your IH story.

So you agree with the rest of the facts.Ok i will go ask the old boy at the JD dealership who also agreed with the story of I.H saving Deere as to where i might find some proof. But from the large number of people who i have talked to on the story who like all kinds of equipment i tend to believe them, you Chad are the only one who comes up with the other story.Next you will tell me a 4430 has 215 Hp and can run for over 9000 hours at that HP level, yes i read those funny JD stories too.

Get your facts in order. I am not the one that is participating in this forum. I never said one damn thing about a 4430 with 215 HP running 9000 hours. I did post a message to the 4430-1066 issue, stating that turning a 4430 to 215 HP, and complaining about the engine not lasting was stupid. I also stated that the engine, left alone, would run close to 10,000 hours, which I have in fact seen. I never have supported turning up the HP on any tractors, other than 4010s to 4020 standards. Another point, is that I never owne a 4430, and never liked them.

As far as the rest of the so cald facts you profess to know, the last time you spouted off like this, I told you I would not play your game, unless you could come up with PROOF. As I stated before, I am not going to play your game, so stop writting about things I supposidly said. And stop using my name.

If you want to chat about this like an educated adult, I am more than willing to do so, provided you can support your claims.

john deere is really a joke, their pop-pop is weak and i don't know how anyone ever farmed with one. we have a 1900 oliver with a 4-53 detroit that has over 10000 hours and still out pulls 830 john deers every month at local tractor pull. even john deere had to copy this with their 8020 with a 6-71, possible the only good tractor with execption of 435, that they ever built. nothing runs like a deere or smells like a john.l
