I have a super 55 gas model and I'd like to add a front end loader. Can anyone provide any information as to what I need to do to accomplish this. What type of loader? What modifications to the hydrolics system? As far as I can tell, I have hydrolics on the rear of the tractor to lift the blade, disk, brush hog, etc... but there are no hydrolic hoses coming out of the gear box like my neighbors david brown tractor. I'm assumig I would need to tap into the gear box to enable me to plug in the new hydrolic lines for the loader???

Steve I have the same situation a 550 no power steering or external hydro hook ups, yet I have three 3/8" plugs and allen screws in the right side of the hydro box. Looking for any advice on how to proceed. Let me know if you find out what is next.

Be careful!

S55's make great loader tractors subject to some limits. Remember, they are not designed for a loader, or to be used as an industrial. If you want to wok one hard every day but a 2-44L (White 550 industrial with factory loader).

I sold my S55 w/loader because of the following issues. I replaced it with a Massey 202 Industrial (it was cheap) which fixed all of the concerns, other than counterweights.

1. The tractor wil be VERY difficult to turn sitting still with a load raised. Repeated static loaded turning will destroy your steering gear. A power steering set-up is preferable but expensive to retrofit.

2. Drive SLOW with heavy loads. The front axle and steering system are a little fragile. Hitting a bump at speed, or dropping a wheel in a hole with a big load, will cause all kinds of heck.

3. Limit what you pick up. The front axle system is not designed to move the world. You already have loaded it with just the loader weight.

4. Counterweight the back. My S55 would HAPPILY pick the back end of the tractor off the ground if I stuck the bucket. At best it was light enough in the rear to limit traction. This was with 3" cylinders, 2500psi pop-off, and loaded 13.4-24's on the back! It's very uncomfortable to know that if you let go of the steering wheel the tractor will rotate around the front tires and fall, probably on you!

Before you put on the loader, make sure the front bearings, bushings, and steering system are gone through and are good. I've heard several people at the local dealer's asking for S55 spindles, and invariably these tractors have loaders on them.

Good Luck.

I know where there is a Freeman loader for a 550 oliver at Wright Brothers Oliver In Bordon,Indiana, that has a front mounted HY.pump with a HY. bucket. I have seen it work. there were going to take it off and work on the pto and the owner said to sell it. That is what I was told.

A Freeman is what I have on my 550- easy installation, decent looking "step through" style (as opposed to the old round tube variety). I had to lengthen the thing a little, but not a big deal.

I know where a loader is sitting in Hastings, MN. If interested drop me a line. Fella was wanting to get rid of it since he sold the tractor. His tractor is now sitting in the Mall of America - General Mills display.

You might want to look at this loader on ebay.

Unless you have a remote hydraulic option, there is really no good way to tap into the tractor hydraulics. Even if you could, you probably wouldn't be happy with the results- tractor hydraulics don't have high enough flow rate to operate a loader very well. Front pump is the way to go- get at least 10 gpm. Also, you'll be unhappy with the loader unless you have power steering on the tractor.

The Super 55 used a front mounted hydralic pump that was attached by a shaft to the lower engine pulley. It allows the loader and the rear hydralics to operate seperately. My 55 has a Wagner loader on it that I was told came off a 9N. I've never bothered to check and see if thats true. HTH.

highly recomend anexternal pump system .unless youhave a factory aux . side pump your hydraulic system will not hold enough fliud if you get it mounted the flow will not produce enough. but the main reason is to save wear on your internal vickers pump. these are around $1200.00 for a new one and gaskets + labor. ther are a couple of white 1510 +1610 loader manuals on ebay they show a complete set up for 550 and super 55
