Would a 5.9 Cummins that's been running a Berkley High Pressure Pump, be suitable has a re-power motor and is $2000 too high?

Just curious.

Hello Myron, Long time. Did you loose the Perkins in your 1850? Or are you looking at doing a refit with another Oliver?

Hey Mike,

Neither really. The 1850 is running good and I don't have another Oliver,,,,, ,,,,, yet. I was just curious and thought someone needing to re-power might be interested.

Did you get your water pump/vibration damper problem fixed?

Egg on my face, some. Have not worked on it yet. I will though. The fan is wobbly and I fear it will cut loose and make a mess of the radiator. Don't use it much right now.

Yeah, I would think that would work. I would try to find out what HP they are and if they have a turbo, Im bettin they dont, and get the hours on the engine, it may have high hours being a pump motor. The other thing is it could be a higher HP engine but have a lot of hours on it. Remember these Cummins engines should go 10,000 + hours before you need to even look at them, and they are real easy to rebuild.

I bought a 5.9L with 2000 hrs on it and no turbo for about $3,000, so Im betting that is about what that engine is. Probably work really good in a small tractor like a 1650 or 1655. Sounds pretty decent, I would check into it.

Thanks Shep. I saw some prices that 310 blocks and cranks are bringing and thought a $2000 Cummins was pretty cheap in comparison.

Got any hay baled yet?

Yeah, that does sound a little cheap for a 5.9L Cummins, I bet if you check into it that they have a lot of hours or are in need of an overhaul.

Hay is still on the stand still for now, the weather has gotten into a pattern of thunderstorming every evening now for over a week. Hard to get hay dry like that. Plus I have my 1850 in the shop learning about hydraulic valves and interlocks in the remote system. Turns out I had a bunch of bad o-rings in my interlock valves for my remotes and it has been causing me problems. Im learning a lot more about hydraulics than I really ever wanted to know but I hope it will be finished up tonight.

Hows the weather been down your way???

Yeah probably high hours and poor maintenance.

Sorry to hear about the hydraulic troubles. Glad to hear your now a expert. I'll know who to call. :^)

About the same weather here. At least it's cooler than normal.

Thanks again for your input.

Sure did Super 55. I'm not sure if that price is reasonable or not. Maybe if the Cummins is new. They aren't far from me, as the crow flies, and I would like to go up and look at their conversions and see what all the kit contains.

I see that your making progress on your 55. You've got a nice web site started too. Keep up the good work.

Really that is probably not a bad price for a new engine with a turbo, and all the "correct" parts to do a conversion. If you repower an Oliver with a new engine and all the right parts like that and pay the labor for someone to do it, it will cost about $10,000 to do a repower, so add labor to that price and you are there. The new engines themselves will cost about $7,000 with a turbo.

My repowers have not cost me that much though, because I use engines that have some hours on them, and I fabricate a lot of my parts that would normally cost a bunch. I have normally spent between $6,000 to $8,000 to put a repower in and that is with painting the tractor and the chrome pipes and a lot of other goodies that you wouldnt normally get at a shop. These Cummins engines last forever so I dont worry about a few hours on them.

As far as I know. They are tring to sell 2 pumps with motors for $5500 each. Motor alone is $2000. I saw the add in Fastline. Here's the link to it.
