Charlyn conversion

I'm in the middle of a Char-Lyn steering motor conversion. The new shaft I received from the parts supplier will not accept my old, original, steering wheel and does not telescope. My preference would be to keep the tractor as original as possible. Is it a common occurrence to have to change steering wheels in a Char-Lyn conversion? Or did I receive the wrong part?

If you buy the kit from oliver it comes with a new steering wheel that fits the new charlyn collum. It will telescope and uses a push button not the hand wheel. The last 2 I did something like Myron and connected the old steering collum to the new parts. The outside of the collum allso has to be connected on the bottem and this has to be made too.Thats why the kit is so much easyer just replace all the parts includeing the steering wheel and you don't have to make any.I used a short piece of pipe and drilled a hole for a cross pin on the bottem and welded the top of it to the nut on the shaft(you need to weld the nut and sleeve so they dont unscrew).

Larry, you indicate that you can get a steering conversion kit from Oliver. Where do you still buy from Oliver? Sounds like that's the way to go.

Jim,

I checked with AGCO a couple months ago and the kits were still available. They quoted me about $625 for the steering motor and hose kits.

Jim, I bought a Char-Lynn steering column with the motor. I then attached the original Oliver column to that. I still have the tilt and telescoping feature with original steering wheel. Here's a picture of the Oliver column attached to the Char-Lynn Column.
I hope.

I've got the char-lynn motor reinstalled and everything fits, but the hydraulic connectors attached to the Char-Lynn are males, and the existing hoses are also males, and it doesn't appear that the threads match? Is there an adapter for this, or do I need to get new hoses now, too? You guys were sure right when you warned me about the size of this job!

It looks like you have the short 3 inch stub shaft. The one that comes with the kit is 12 inches and the steering wheel attaches right to it and serves as the steering collum. There is no extra outside piece used.

Yeah, I used the short Char-Lynn column and attached the outer shaft to that. Luckily the column cover still fits and clamps to the Char-Lynn column, as you can see in the picture. Once installed, it all looks original. To the casual observer at least.

I clamped one like that ,but the last one i made 2 pieces like you have going down that went up and welded to the tube that way some one can't pull it off.If you have the 12 inch collum either you need the new wheel or you have to take it off and go back and make your own parts to make the old parts work.Where you have the saginaw bottem I made a U shaped piece that looks like the ones in the 1955 or 2-105.
