OLIVER C88?

I don't normally post to this board but I'm a regular to the Tales board.

Could someone help me with a description and attributes of a C88? I understand it's a large tractor but that doesn't explain much. A picture would be great but I can't find one in any of the regular places.

This is a 1949 vintage tractor.

Are you asking about an Oliver RC88? This would be a Row Crop, 6 cylinder tractor made from 48 to 53. This was the largest tractor they made. There should be pictures in the photo gallery in yt mag.

Or it could be HC, for High Compression(gas).

Dennis,
You actually are both right. The old 88s had a C88,C88D, and other letters stamped on the serial/model number plate on the side of the transmission. This was used to signify which set of gears were in the transmission and if it was a diesel. The 77s also had the same thing. I can't remember off the top of my head if it would then say industrial, row crop, or standard on the nameplate.

I've had lots, and sometimes yes, and sometimes no. I've had them where they were gas right from the factory, and said Diesel on the tag. Unfortunately, Oliver tags weren't all that helpful, or accurate. An old Oliver guy told me one time that the tags were made up gas(HC) or Diesel ahead of time, and stamped with the number when the tractor was built, but the Diesel tags were over produced, so they just threw them on the tractors anyway, Diesel or not. From the number of improperly tagged Olivers I've had, I tend to believe him.
