this is my first "big" tractor and it seems to run rough and miss at high rpms in idle. Also it is hard to start when it is hot.

O. K. Are you making a statement or are you looking for help? We need more to go on than this. First thing take off the exhaust manifold and just slide it up. See if one cylinder misses or if the miss moves to different cylinders or what happens. How does it start cold? Does it have white smoke when it is cold and trying to start? Does it have white smoke starting when it has been worked for an hour?

Sounds like you just need a rebuild, and either in an engine is just a slow form of murder(or FAST in some and most) If it needs either in this warm weather, it is in need of some major TLC. Maybe could be bad compression and just new rings could work, maybe a little to do with fuel system. Good luck whatever it is.
