I just bought a Cockshutt 40 with an adjustable wide front end and a three point hitch. How common is the three point? I've never seen one and i'm wondering if i've found somthing rare? Any help would be appreciated.

They are not really rare but hard to find complete original for the person who wants one with out paying more then they are worth! Alot of people who have no paticular use for them will take all but hydraulic box off and put it away to lighten tractor or just to get it out of the way. I have several tractors with them on and use them regularly. Irv

The 3pt for the 40 is the same as the 35 and 50 not really common, but not all that rare. Do you have the floating 3pt or the fixed version?

The fixed type rock shaft as we are calling it was mostly designed for mounted cultivaters. It can be used as 3 point if you have those arms and not the cultivater brackets. The other rockshaft uses a pin and 2 holes to alow you to lock shaft in for downward and fixed pressure the other hole is for floating possition! Irv

The fixed version has the arm for the hydraulic cylinder welded to the rockshaft. On the floating version the arm for the cylinder is free and it has an extra bracket and a pin that allows you to have rockshaft fixed to the arm or floating (able to float up if the implement rises). The floating version came along around the same time as the 35 I think, so it would be used on 1956 and later model 40s. The floating version is a vast improvement over the fixed one if you want to use it for back blading, but ether one is a useful addition to any of the round nose tractors. Enjoy your new Cockshutt and dont hesitate to ask questions. There are a lot of good people here with a wealth of useful information.
