My brother aquired a 1963? Cockshutt 770 Row Crop with a non-adjustable widefront. It has the metal grill with the horizontal slots like all early 770's.Any idea how many of these were made for Cockshutt? Also the green paint is showing through in some spots and it looks like the Cockshutt Tan and Red is original. Did they paint them green at the factory then send them to Canada where they were re-painted? The serial plate says Cockshutt and has a number(don't know it off hand)I also noticed on the rear axle housings where an Oliver would have stamped "Oliver Row Crop" there is nothing which leads me to believe when these tractors were built they knew they were going to Canada so why the base coat of green?

My two cents worth which doe not mean anything. In the winter of 63-64 when the new products were shown to the dealers out of the Columbus branch it was mentioned that for any 770 or 550 in dealer stock, kits would be made available at dealer request to update them to the new style grill. That is why some older tractors have the checker boad grill and others do not. Also the words Oliver diesel did noat appear on the B series 1800 tractors in the fall of 62. Another two cents worth, The dealership sold a very late 770 gas to an older farmer that wanted a front mounted belt pulley. It was not available so we took one off a used tractor, altered the power steering lines installed the sheet metal off a tractor that had the hole for the belt pulley and made the customer happy. We probably would not have made the sales if we would not have done that. That is an exaple you see some of the things you do.

Thanks for your 2 cents!I really like reading what you guys that used to work at Oliver dealerships have to say. That must have been an interesting time when Cockshutt went out and all of the changes that took place up through the 70's. The amazing thing is Oliver, Cockshutt and Minni-Molines were all good tractors and to think none of those names remain today makes us collectors even more driven to restore them, use them, pull them etc. and preserve a piece of tractor history.

Well I am no expert on Oliver or Cockshutt but I have never heard of a Cockshutt 770. You should post a picture on the Photos board so that we can see it. I thought that at the time of the 770 Cockshutt had completely separated itself from Oliver and were marketing their 500 series (540,...,570).

Don't get me wrong, I am not doughting you I am just very curious.

This is the time period when White Motor Company had purchased Oliver then Cockshutt. There were no Cockshutt engineered tractors produced I believe after 1962. Oliver started marketing their tractors with Cockshutt paint from 1963 on but I've never seen a 770 Cockshutt with the old style grill. The 770 was made until 1967 I think so I've seen some with the checker board grill which was put on the 770's in 1963.

Thanks for the info Kris. I love Cockshutt/Oliver cross over tractors. I have a Cockshutt 60 standard that I am restoring right now and I missed a Cockshutt 550 utility by a couple of months.

A Cockshutt 770 would be really cool to restore as I love the Ollie 6 cylinder.
