Since this discussion I have also heard from several sources that in total 3- 580's were produced. I wonder what happened to the other two.

According to the story, they were both cut up for scrap. They were being equipped with planetary final drives, and were not completed or operational.

The story goes that three 580 Supers were built. The experimental tractors had the six cylindar perkins 354 motor - a grandfather to the engines that were later installed in the 1850 and White versions. The tractors were also fitted with a new differential to reduce gear noice and increase efficiency, but I understand the one remaining 580 was retro-fitted with the standard differential before it left the factory. This remaining 580 Super was located on a farm in Canada 12-13 years back and brought to Ohio for restoration. I believe it does reside in Maryland these days.

The story in the Cockshutt book is that after the purchase of the Cockshutt company by White, word went through the factory one day that "they're cutting up the 580's". Personnel who remain nameless "rescued" the one 580 that was in operaing condition, and spirited it away to safety. I say "rescued" because to use a term like "stole" would be indelicate. . . All of us Cockshutt fanciers are eternally grateful for the foresight of that person.

I went looking for the picture and its on the 1998 dupont tractor calander. It lists 3 owners so thats why it did not sell at the sale. The starter, fuel pump and oil filter are all on the right side.

A fellow in maryland has one. His father had a big collection and when he died they sold most all the tractors, but kept the 580.It was pictured on a calander a few years ago.

Yes, one does exist. It is a prototype tractor and to a certain extend some of the engineeering data was used in the development of the Oliver 1850 or so we were told in Service school in the winter of 64-65
