Have a bead on a later model 550, unfortuantely some miles away. Owner says it needs an OH, has no power and smokes. How much would an engine redo run, parts and labor?

Also, no remote hyd. How much would the adder cost and is it capable to be added to all tractors, or only certain ones? It has a 3 pt.

It's a drive, so I'd like to know my costs before I make the trip. Thanks everybody!

I just finished a 550 overhaul and I did not trust myself with the engine so I hired it done. The best price on the OH kit was from the AGCO dealer. The total, including labour, was $2000CAN and this included a refurbished water pump, carb kit and a few other extras (eg repair on tach gear).
I agree with the comment on a front mounted hydraulic pump. I've been using mine for 18 years and I still marvel at the responsiveness of the loader, and my backhoe runs just great from the same front mounted pump. I also have a set of remote hydraulics running of the front pump but these are all ORed (ie only loader OR backhoe OR remotes at one time)
The 550 has been a great workhorse for me and I highly recommend putting some quality effort into having it work just right. Good luck

First of all if you do need a kit shop around for price. There are other people in the midwest that handle this stuff. Without seeing the tractor you may be able to get by with a set of rings and a valve grind. On the hydraulics, first question, what do you intend to do with the hydraulics. If the answer is a loader, go crank driven pump so you have some speed in the unit. If you want a rough price on sleeves and pistons 226-1611 is a NAPA number times four and most of the real ag engine guys will beat it a bunch. A good front pump and valve will not cost you much over 500 and then you have something. Questions?

Re external hydraulics- there doesn't seem to be an easy way to add your own external valve, because there is no usable "power beyond" port. Some guys have talked about designing an adapter, but to my knowledge, no one has come up with anything.

I thought there was a plate you removed under the left thigh area, and bolted on a remote hyd package. Am I wrong?

(Had a S55 on the farm until 25 yr. ago, so I'm a little foggy here)

Actually, its in the area of your right knee- and you are correct. But the remote hydraulic package is hard to find, and costs about $500 if you can find one. Its an Oliver part, and is only available used. They've pretty much been scarfed up from any parts machines in the boneyards.

Mike

I think I have the raised clover leaf cover that you are talking about with a 3/8 plug in the center. Is this the port that I would hook up a loader 1/2 inch quick disconnent too? Would the three point control then control the loader?

I've looked into making some, and it's not trivial. There's three spool valves in those things, and that isn't cheap machining. Easiest thing I've come up with is machining an adapter plate with hose ports for your own controls. When I got a shot at one for under $500 I jumped at it.
