Hey boys,
I just bought a '37 HP/ Oliver 70. The block is cracked front to back between every cylinder. The front and rear ends of the block seem o.k. Think this can be repaired, or is the block junk? Also...just looked at the classifieds and there is a '39 5 gear block for sale, will it fit?
Thanx in advance, Larry

Gentlemen,
Thanx for the info, it is appreciated! The guy I bought it from had the head done about 2 yrs ago, then decided he did'nt want to go any further. He said that it ran but one cylinder would foul out with water after a short time, so I suspect the worst. thanx again Larry

5 gear blocks are all the same but a 39 is a late one, most likely from a standard as most[never say all in the world of Oliver] of the row crops were 3 gear in 39. If you are interested in a 5 gear block or engine parts feel free to contact me as I most likely will have them. Based on the 70's I have taken apart finding a good block that is not cracked between the cilinders is rair. A crack between the center two of less than 1/16 you can leave alone or JB weld and use copper coat in liberal amounts. When the cracks move to the next two cilinders than the block has had it.The cracks are from heat or cold and if you look in the water passages of most 5 gear engines you will find several areas where water flow was poor and rust and sludge settled. At that point the crud insulated the sleeve and forced heat or the crud retained water after it was drained and the frost pushed the block apart.

Are these cracks in the top of the block, between the cylinders? are you going to work the tractor?

Yes, the tractor will be used, not hard, but it will be used. The head is off, but I have not pulled the liners yet, and the cracks are about 1/32" wide at the top of the block

Flush the block and fill it with antifreeze I might consider letting the sleeves in if it does not leak. If it does leak pull the pan and see where the leak is comming from then make a decision on what action is necessary. The head gaskets seals the liners and the cracks at the top of the block anyway. 70's are a little before my time, but have seen this on a few 77 models and if the bottom does not leak, never had any problems.

I have no comments but questions for you hart parr guys. Do the 70's run hot. I have a 1936 and I cant seem to keep it cool. The only leaks is the rear main oil seal and I'm in the process of fixing it. On rubber wheels where the rims spoked or solid? Someone told me solid but mine are spoked with flat iron and the part number on the hub matchs the original parts book. I think I got in over my head.

I had fits timing my first 1936 HP70, it would boil water in about 15 minutes. With a timing light the timing was completely off the mark. I kept playing with the timing until it was correct. I have another 1936 HP70, the engine was in a basket when I bought it. I borrowed a service manual to use to get it right. The timing procedure is wierd. According to the manual set number 6 piston to the top, line up the camshaft marks, turn the crankshaft one turn so number 1 is on compression, line up the magneto marks. The cross slot on the mag connector should be about horizontal. That is the way I am doing this engine, I hape it works. Hope this helps. Delbert
