Some of you may remember an earlier post where I stated that I was considering buying the worst-looking 1655 gas in history. The seller originally had a $3000 firm price on it. He refused to budge, so I walked. He called about 15 minutes after I got home, offering to sell for $2300, "quite a deal for a nice tractor with a wide front end". I said flatly, "no thanks" and hung up. He called the next morning while I was crawling under the house killing spiders, and offered it to me for $2000, take it or leave it. I left it. I offered $1655 for it, last chance, take it and don't waste my time. He took it. Hiding my enthusiasm, I set a record for driving 40 miles and laid the cash on him. My wife, ever the optimist, asked if I was gonna haul that big thing home in the trunk of our Pontiac. Got that covered babe.....I'm gonna drive it. And I did. 20 bucks worth of gas and three quarts of oil later. Water pump leaks, as does every joint on the tractor that contains fluid. But the ragged old abused 1655 made it home under its own steam on 5 cylinders. Why would I need 6? I am looking forward to resurrecting this old girl and will try and keep anyone interested posted with my progress. Regards.....P

Wow, forty miles after laying in the weeds for who knows how long. You are a brave brave man!
At least all the moisture is out of it! Congrats!

And, there are no mosquitos alive in the exactly 39.6 miles from my house to its former home. I was not brave. I was desperate, scared, excited, and had forgotten to arrange for a tow truck to go get it. I really didn't trust the seller enough to ask him to hold it until I could make more sensible arrangements, so I mounted up. I checked the fluids, all were okay and surprisingly clean, there was enough fresh gas in the tank to get me to a gas station, and it ran, so off I went. I ran home, wide open, in the "big gear" with the Hydraul-Shift in high. No problems whatsoever until I fouled #3 spark plug about five miles from home. There was a solid cloud of smoke from the exhaust, especially when the engine pulled. The clutch seems okay, the over-under seems okay, and at least three tires are still usable, the right front having lost about half the tread on the way home. I am looking forward to working on it this winter, when honey-do stuff is somewhat slower. I need to be reallly good after pulling this stunt. My wife is all in favor of my doing this tractor, but, the night we went to get it, I had promised to take her out to supper. Oops! Thanks for your interest and encouragement. Regards.....P

I hope you'll consider keeping a diary of your restoration including pictures and have Sherry print it in the HPOCA magazine. My favorite stories are those where a neglected Oliver is made new again. Good luck to you!

Glad you bought it at a reasonable price and are going to restore it. You'll have a beautiful tractor when you get done. Give us a before and after picture and keep us posted.
