Does anyone have any information (history, pictures, patent information, etc.) on the Oliver Chill Plow? It was, I believe, the first Oliver plow ever made, and was invented by a Virginia farmer. That is all the information I possess at this time, but want to learn all I can about it.

C. H. Wendel's book "Oliver Hart-Parr" in the Crestline series contains a history of the Oliver Chilled Plow Company on pages 107-122. There is an illustration of the trademark of James Oliver's company "Oliver Gave to the World the Chilled Plow."

To paraphrase the author, C. H. Wendel wrote that James Oliver used plows of the design produced by Jethro Wood from original design concepts of Thomas Jefferson. C. H. Wendel wrote in his book that Oliver's patent on the essential features of the chilled iron plow was No. 76,939 of 4/21/1868. The book has hundreds of black and white photos or illustrations.

You can obtain this hardcover volume in the Crestline series from Motorbooks (MBI Publishing 1-800-826-6600). I had my copy signed by the author at his presentation at the Ag. History Museum at South Dakota State University.
