I finally removed the cover for the external hydraulics adapter plate on my Oliver 550.
I thought it would be simple to machine an adapter plate to install 1/2" hydraulic hoses.
Doesn't look as easy as I thought. Not enough room between the in and out holes to go straight in as far as I can tell. I guess you have to machine a thick block and come in from the side or? A 1/2" pipe thread needs approx. a 3/4" hole.

Somebody earlier said they had a drawing for this.
Could I please get this drawing from somebody.

Would a thick block of aluminum be strong enough or should I stick to steel?

Phil

Don't know why you are going 1/2 inch pipe. 3/8 pipe is what size was used and in this day and age throw the pipe thread away! Use something with straight threads and an o-ring seal type fitting. Less problems. Aluminum will work if you do it right. What are you trying to run with this and do you know if you have the early flow & pressure system or the later one?

The inlet and outlet holes on the tractor are 7/16" and I thought a 3/8" hose would restrict the flow. If 3/8" would work this would solve my problem. The inlet/outlet parts on the control valve are 3/4" npt but I could use an adapter of course.
I don't have the serial number of the tractor with me, but it is a later model with a fiberglass front end, so I am reasonable sure I have the later pressure system and will not need the adapter kit for the filler for the older Oliver 550's.
I want to use the hydraulics for a large round baler.
thanks for your advice.

Phil

I think my advice would be to use a larger tractor on a big round baler- Believe you need about 60 HP for one, and I'm afraid you'll tear up the 550.

My thoughts exactly. A 1650 would be a great choice. Most farmers here use a 1650 or larger to make round bales.

I thought the 4'x ? round balers will work on a 45 horsepower tractor.
Did I get wrong information?
I know the older 6' x ? take more horsepower.

Your 550 is only about 40 horse power and I think you are going to be disapointed in the speed of the hydraulics. a 1600, 1650/55 would make a good baler tractor. I talked to a dealer in MO. once in hay country and he was talking 55/60 Horse power. I don't know what valve you were planning on using but like a gresen 400 is drilled and tapped for 3/4 pipe. It will handle twice the flow of the 550 hydraulic system. Also valves like that tend to have their own relif valve and you need to have 250 psi more at the tractor than you do af the relief valve on the remote valve for good results. Early Super 55 hydraulics had the filler kit, not the 550

I have the drawing of the port adapter. The aluminum alloy is Fortel aluminum. The output of the 550 pump is 5 GPM @ 1700 PSI will power a front end loader [slowly] or the original front snow plow lift cyl. Fortel is an alloy used in automotive housings and free machining. My .02

A FACTORY AUX PUMP WILL PUMP 1700 PSI IF IT HAS THE ADAPTER UPGRADE ON THE INTERNAL VICKERS HYD. LIFT PUMP OTHER WISE YOU ONLY GET 1500 PSI .MOST AUX. PUMPS WERE USED ON LOADERS IF YOUR INTERNAL LIFT PUMP HAS BEEN REPLACED SINCE 1967 YOU SHOULD HAVE THE 1700 PSI PUMP.
