Almost burned my 1650 up today

Took the 1650 in to the car wash for a bath. Tired of all the bird crap and dust on it. Washing away when I thought something must be hot it was steaming. It hit me it was steaming under the fuel tank, looked it was a wire glowing and burning the insulation off of it. RIGHT under the fuel tank, shut the key off and then pulled the fuel stop. It quit burning, finally figured out when the alternator was changed to a single wire back whenever, somebody left the wire from the key switch to regulator loose on the regulator end. I must have knocked the tape off of the end of the wire when washing it and it shorted out to the mechanical fuel pump housing. Very glad it is a diesel. Removed the wire after getting back home had melted the insulation and tape wrap off from end to end. Other wires appeared to be ok. Removed the voltage regulator while I was at it.

Careful with those 1650's, one of the best made.
There already is a shortage of good USA runners,
we need every Oliver that's left.
