Message below reminded me: After reading years ago that the 550 was made up to the end of Oliver, I've always wondered about the 550 in later years of production...you did not see them on dealers lots in our area. You did see the 1250 and on up run of Fiat-based tractors. Don't know if they were not many 550s made, not marketed in our area, or just what. Dad went to buy a new 550 in 1969 based on a neighbor's having good luck with one, and was sold on a 1250, which we traded in after 1 year due to some bad luck with it. The dealer(s) stocked these Fiats over the 550 I assume due to cost/profit? Don't know what the dealer said about the 550 to get the 1250 sold. Was a 550 special order, or was this just isolated to our area? At the shows, the 550s you see are late 50s/early 60s in my experience. Where are the late 550s? Some are no doubt still working. Anyone know the story here?

I'm not an expert at it but if idle starts acting like that only once the whole thingis warmed up, maybe you should check that the gas line going to the carb is not beeing heated.

I am surprised you have not received any comments. In 1960 when Oliver introduced the model 500 tractor is was meant to be a low cost tractor that appealed to the farmers that needed a utility type tractor that could not afford the 550. The 1250 was also lower in prices than the 550 and was susposeably based on the luck that Cockshutt had with the 411 in Canada.Remember there was an influx of made in Europe tractors here. I think both the 1255 and 1265 had some advantages over a 550. However both were short on hydraulics and of course the Fiat like most of the tractors from Europe had a 2 stage clutch. That little Fiat 3 cylinder diesel is a tuff built tractor.
