Oliver 1550 Hot Operation

My Oliver 1550 runs great when cold. As it warms up, it suddenly starts shutting down with the engine surging and surging and then dying. Adding almost full choke brings it up to running speed again, and then running extrememly rich, I can keep it going, however, with a substantial loss of power, poor fuel usage and a lot of smoke.

What would cause the engine to stop running when hot? (typically 30-45 minutes use)

Next time it happens, immediately remove the gas cap. If the engine then runs normally, the vent in the cap is plugged, clean or replace it. If not, replace the ignition coil. As they die, they tend to produce little if any current when hot but will often function perfectly when cold. If it ends up being the coil, I'd at least check the points for gap and condition as a failing coil is very hard on points.

Well, I think that may have been the problem. I haven't been able to get it overly hot since you gave me this tip (I'm working hard on an 8N at the moment). How would you go about cleaning out the fuel cap - or is there a source for fuel caps?

AGCO dealer will sell you a new one but make sure it is a vented cap.

I would suspect a fuel delivery problem rather than coil- if coil quits when hot, it usually quits completely, and the rig won't run for love or money until it cools off.
