I would like opinions as to the best piston and sleeve sets for a 1655 diesel (1973). Thanks.

J. Schweibert is correct there are two Service Bulletins. The one I listed, GB-10-106 Supersedes and cancels Service Bulletin 430 724. This bulletin lists the correct dimensions.

Specifications for valve projection above the fire deck is given in Service Bulletin GB-10-106 dated 6-8-77.

Be carefull. There were two bulletins. One had the correct dimensions. The other one did not.

Just for sake of discussion. Why are you asking?
If you are thinking a new set will help starting problems, most likey a set of valve seats in the head and the valve recession set correctly will do more good.

Thanks for replying John--My 1655 diesel started missing and has internal noises, so I'm in the process of taking it apart. Don't know what I'll find, but anticipate having to completely overhaul it. I'm thinking of taking .060 off the head to help with the starting.

if you havn't done so already then new 2/0 battery cables with solder ends and clean ground connection to frame will help with starting problem

Not a good move on the head. The intake and exhaust valves are set at differetn depths and the basic combustion chamber is the bowl in the piston. Also before you get carried away, takeing the pistons out, measure the protrusion of the pistons in the block. Post this on the Hart/Parr web page and I will send you a copy of the bulletin that had the depth on it. If you take 60 off your valves may bend as they are going to hit the pistons.

Thanks, I think I will just have the head redone to factory specs. Injector position then will not be affected either. Thanks again.

Dean Get in contact with me I will get you specs and seat sizes. I used to do these when I taught the diesel head rebuilding classes. Post this on the Hart/Parr web page and I will send a U2U
