Oliver 60 Belt Pulley Use

I have a question that has been bothering me since I found out that the pulley on an Oliver 60 only stops in the center Neutral position.

How do you tension the belt??

Now I must admit I am not very familiar with belt driven equipment but any time I have seen a belt used they typically put the belt around the pulley and then drive the tractor to tighten the belt. How can you do this with a 60 if the pulley is turning? Or do you just let the equipment start as you tighten the belt? The whole idea doesn't sound to safe to me.

Get everything hooked up with the belt as close to tension as you can get it then put the tractor in reverse and, with the ignition switch off or coil/mag wire pulled, bump the starter. Another way is to use a come-along tied off to your pickups' ball hitch....or just use a chain and pull everything tight with the truck....or another tractor. I also saw a guy use a tamping bar set in the ground a couple of inches as a lever. He put a chain between the bar and the tractor hitch and pulled it back where he wanted it while his wife set the brakes. :-)

The two cly. Deeres, most steam tractors, and the old oil pulls were the same way. Back then you just had to live with the the thresher turning while you backed to tighten the belt. Have a good day and be carefull.
