1955 Oliver Hydraulic Pump ruined?

A friend of mine was recalled to active duty, he's in Iraq now and I'm trying to help his family with their 1955 Oliver which they had been using for mowing with a 7' bushhog. This is a much bigger tractor than I'm used to and I think its too big for mowing but its what they have. Yesterday I finally got the tractor running and started mowing and noticed a burning smell after maybe 10 minutes, what I think is the hydraulic pump was smoking and hot to touch (lower left side of tractor between rear wheel and seat). I found the dipstick for hyd. fluid behind the seat, it was empty.

Should I just dump more hydraulic fluid in it and see what happens? Or is that a waste of fluid, the thing was smoking so it had to be really hot. Does it make sense to pull the pump and replace it?

Thanks in advance for any info and advice, I really appreciate it. I have a little experience with my MF135 and a Ford 2N but this Oliver is more tractor than I've ever sat on before.

You must look at the filter also. The filter is on the inlet side of the pump and if it plugs this will starve the pump. The original paper style filter was very sensetive to different oils. We had several pumps fail because customers had bought "universal" oil that had pluged the filter.

Put about 2 gallon of type 55 or compateable hydraulic oil in it and see if it steers. Also check the oil in the rear end. if it is overfull, the seals may be out of the PTO unit which then allows the hydraulic oil to go to the final drive compartment. Rather than purchase a new pump you may be able to rebuild it with a new rotating group (pumping unit)
