Oliver 1850 purchase advice request

I have read a lot of what you folks have written & have, to my surprise, come to see the purchase of an Oliver 1850, with a Perkins diesel, to possibly be a wiser purchase for my needs, instead of a JD 4020, which I used as a youngster. I will be looking for one with a loader, PTO & as I am living in the "somewhat" moist Pacific Northwest, I would like advice on the width of tires available. When I go on my purchase hunt, I would like to go armed with as much knowledge as I can get. So folks, what should I look, or look out, for?

Look for one with the MFWD option you would give up some turning but it's well worth it in poor conditions espically with a loader. Other wise we have had loaders on our regular wide front olivers for years with out problems just keep it greased and when you buy it make sure every thing is tight to start with. If you go 2 WD and traction is still an issue maybe try a set of duals they really help. Good luck.

Happy you picked the right green!But really the only problems i know of is the steering link on the wide front it looks like a t anyway the holes wear and it can be a bear to drive at road speed.But a new one from white solves the problem.And the other problem is the hitch support wears on the corners,but any welder can repair,you will be very happy with your choice and so will your pocketbook,but your fuelman will be upset:}

If your gonna do much loader work, you may be happier with the "industrial" front axle (fixed track solid bar axle, 9:00 x 20 tires on cast wheels) instead of the standard adjustable track ag axle.

Standard 18.4 x 34 rubber loaded with liquid will do just fine on the back.

The 1850 is a good, bullet-proof machine!

Thanks, to all, for sound advice. I anticipate no more than 3 months before making a purchase and all this information makes for better shopping ability on my part. Besides, it doesn't hurt to have a tractor that folks will just want to stop and look at, especially one that earns its keep! Now I just have to start trying to find one around here. It seems the folks around Seattle are not much for large tractors.

I recently saw one in Austin, TX at
Capitol City Oliver Tractor on Hwy 183.
They were asking $7,000.00 for it.
No cab, fair condition.

Excellent choice!One really wouldn't need more than a good set of 18.4x38 rear rubber.Ihave a1550 gas w/loader on 15.5 rubber and am not enamored with them.
