Oil Pump Help-Please

On a 232 gas in a 1550, where the oil pump pickup screen fits into the oil pump--is there supposed to be an O-ring on the outside of the pipe that fits into the pump casting? I've loaned out my parts and service manuals and wish I had 'em now.
I'm getting fluctuating oil pressure only when going up a steep hill, indicating a starving pump due to low oil level, but the level is fine. Only thing I've been able to figure is when the oil runs to the back of the pan, the pump is sucking air at this joint where the pickup pivots. Any help appreciated.

Thanks, appreciate your help. I've got the pan off, thought maybe the pickup screen had come out, but it had not. On this model, the cotter pin holds the pickup screen in, but a couple of tabs welded to the tube act as stops for the the pivot action. Cleaned the pickup screen out, of course. It just seems to fit kind of loose and I thought maybe it had an O-ring to help seal it up.

My 1550 doesn't do this going up hills.You could bend the pipe down if it reily is high.One other thing is oliver came out with a one quart larger oil pan for the 1555.I have both and its hard to see any differance,but maybe this change was to help this problem.how much oil did you get out? My S55 will drop oil preasure going up steep hills if it gets 2 quarts low.

I didn't know about the different pan for a 1555. I would bet the purpose was for this problem. I'm guessing that the clearance between the pickup tube and the pump body increases with age and wear, causing the pump to suck air when the oil runs to the back. I got out about 6 quarts, which is what I put in it when changing oil and filter. We only use it for mowing and upkeep any more, and I don't know when it actually started this. Dad bought this tractor new, and I know it didn't used to do this. I was mowing a hilly area and saw what was going on. It only happens when going up a steep hill. First time I saw the oil pressure dip to about 10 lbs, then go back up when cresting the hill, I stopped and shut down to check oil level--just under the mark. When I took the pan off, I expected to see the pickup laying in the pan, that wasn't it either. Raising the overall oil level and/or modifying the pickup, plus keeping close watch are my only ideas right now. dwm

A lot of the older tractors like that had this problem when going up hills. There is a cotter key on the sump that allows the sump to only pivot so far. We took that out so it can go to the bottom of the pan and be able to suck up all of the oil. The other choice is just to over fill the crankcase about a quart.

My book does't show anything there and I don't remember seeing anything.The floating screen could be stuck or jammed up.You could have the wrong dipstick in that tractor.Its very easy for some clod to switch one from a 1650 or larger.This makes the oil low evan thow it reads fine on the stick. So drain out your oil and see if you have 5 quarts of oil in there.This is the easyest to check first and if this is it you will have saved a lot of work.
