Thanks for all the replys below to my questions on the 550 gas. Tomorrow I go to look at a 550 DSL. What should I be careful of in the dsl? Is it better tractor than the gas? I read ShepFL's article, says dsl is more thrifty than gas. My experience is that dsl's are harder to start especially in the cold stuff. Just like many of you said in your replys to my post, I don't want to start with a lemon or a machine that has been butchered.

Again, I am a newbie on tractors in general but can see that these 550's are more tractor than the ford equivalents. I appreciate your suggestions and advice.

Dsl. are not for everyone. Here in FL the winters are not as long or cold as if in MN. I like them because of the hard work they do. I really work my rigs reclaiming ground and attempting to be a truck farmer. I like the DSL so much I am currently considering another DSL (1650 WFE) if I can swing the deal.

I have an AC D10 gasser that works pretty hard and I am impressed. I also have a Farmall 140 gasser that works but also likes to DRINK! Breaking ground on a new 20 acre field will run me 4 tanks of gas (FARMALL) vs. 1 tank of dsl(550). I have been fortunate that my DSL has not encountered any issues - the key I think is routine maintenance (filter changes).

Diesels are good engines and like to work hard. If you are going to use the tractor fairly regularly and want a real strong engine than a diesel is a good choice.

However they don't like cold weather and if something goes wrong with them, the cost of repair is ALOT more than gas. All it take is an injector pump failure and the fuel savings is negated by the cost of repair. Plus I feel that Gas seems simpler and easier to trouble shoot and work on because you don't need special tools or gauges.

Just my $0.02. (and that is Cdn dollars)

I plow snow at -30F. Unless a diesel engine and its injector pump are perfect and you have the right fuel in the tank and you have added the right additives to the tank, fat chance getting one started under those conditions. My 1650G, on the other hand, starts at -30F just like it does at +95F. Most of the old-timers up here who plow with a tractor use a gas tractor and save the diesels for field work.

Also, diesel fuel is actually priced higher here than regular depending on the season.

Easily 1/3 less fuel per hour, with a dsl, here in PA. it gets a little chilly in winter, my old 55 never failed to start when called upon, however I keep it in good condition and run it about every day, good batterys very important. I have started our 55 and 550's in -0 temperatures on many occasions. Wouldn't want any thing else
