I am a tractor newbie. I find myself needing a utility tractor and have the opportunity to buy an Oliver 550 with a 5ft brush hog. I believe it is a 1960 model. Looked at an 8N but can tell the 55-550 series is more tractor. It has been converted to 12v Neg gr. Seems to run well but dies at idle. Hydraulics have the hiccup when raised. Tires are no better than 25% in my estimation and are filled with CC. No Leaks. Seat has been replaced with an aftermarket adjustable with back and armrests. Doesn't have power steering and there is a little play in the steering. Doesn't have any lights. Transmission and clutch seem OK although it is hard to find the second set of gears, no other noises in drive train that I can tell. Tach works and the temp gauge works but fuel gauge doesn't. Doesn't have amp or oil guages and instead has lights. I thought this was odd for a tractor. Brush hog is old but seems to be OK. This owner has several tractors on his farm including 2 other 550's and currently uses this one only for cutting. He tells me he just doesn't need this one anymore
The owner is asking $ 4500.00. Is this a reasonable price for this set up? What other things should I be looking at? I appreciate any advise or suggestions.

need to be under $3500 for this package.

..... and i'm not sure its worth it if you've got to turn around and buy rubber....

Price sounds a bit high. I guess your seller knows that the Super 55 and 550s do sell well. I would REconsider for a few reasons:
a) sounds as if seller or someone has 'reworked' this rig
b) by you own admission you are a newbie as we all once were, better to start off with a rig that at least runs most of the time. The rest of the time you can bust your knuckles like the rest of us AND feel right at home. c) to start off with a lemon of a tractor or one someone may have cobbled together may alienate you to the whole line - not a good thing
d) there are plenty of Oliver 550s around - keep looking - don't make a snap decision you may regret.
e) make sure you get enough tractor for your needs
f) come back here frequently as the Tractor Gods tend to smile more on Oliver drivers :)

I agree with Ollie that this tractor sounds like a basket case. There are a lot of Super55s and 550s that are in good shape for 3,000. The rotary cutter probably isn't worth 200.00. I encourage you to keep on the Oliver trail because you get more tractor for your money. The 8N isn't in the class with Oliver 55,550.

Way too high. Sounds like it's been butchered. There's a 770 in nice shape with a brush hog in the local paper for $2,500.
