1650 PTO doesn't always stay engaged

THis tractor is new to me so I don't know how the PTO handle is supposed to feel. There is no snap or any kind of indication that the PTO is locked into the engage position and fairly often the inplement I am running just stops going without any input from me. Pulling the handle forward re-engages it but it is annoying. I am sure it could be fixed with a bungy cord but it seems like it should snap into gear and stay there until I am done with it. Is there something wrong with it or is that just the way it is? Thanks, Pete

I had the same problem when first using the PTO on my 1850. I found that I was not pushing the PTO lever forward far enough, over center, for it to lock. Not being used to Oliver's, I could easily move the lever forward, the PTO would engage and it felt as if the lever had reached it's forward travel limit. What I did not realize is that I needed to give it a little more push to make travel over center and lock.

A correctly adjusted PTO clutch will require 54 to 62 pounds of pull on the lever handle to lock it over center. (43 to 55 lbs. on single speed, 540 only, PTO. )

I'm guessing your making the same mistake I did or your PTO clutch needs adjustment.

I suggest that you get the 1650 Owners and Service manuals. They sure helped me. You can order them right here at YTMag.

Myron gave you the right answer. Let me add that you need to correct the problem asap before you wear out the PTO clutch.
