I have a 1957 Gas model that I need advice on. The wiring looks original, but the starter button does not seem to be wired in accordance with my manual. There are two terminals on the back of the button. One wire goes to the solenoid and, according to what I see in the manual, the other terminal is not used. My tractor has a wire coming off the other connection, and it looks like it was connected to the ammeter.
Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks much.

I could be wrong but I ran into this same thing on my 40 and 35! The original push button switch only had 1 terminal that was hooked to starter selenoid because the tractors were + ground and the swith presses into whole on dash and had a clip to keepit there and complete the connection! When button was pushed the circuit was completed to the selenoid. I converted mine to - ground and wired it as you have said. I have one of those sincle pole switches that I bought new/old stock. just for a keep sake or if I decide to go 100% original. Irv

Well, that would work, and would explain the single wire. My 35 has a conventional two wire, but it's been changed over to 12 volt with alternator.

I think yours is hooked up correctly. Both terminals of a switch have to go to something, or there's nothing to "switch". Normally, starter button will get power from the ammeter on one terminal (nothing special about hooking to the ammeter, its just usually the closest source of power), other terminal goes to the small terminal on the solenoid so the solenoid gets power when you push the button.

Hi Mike;

Thank-you for your reply. Your answer seems to make sense. The picture in the book is hard to read, so I wanted another opinion before I hooked it up. Still need to unstick the engine so it will be awhile before I can give it a whirl.

Thanks again for your help! BN
