Going thru some old boxes of 'junk' from my youth and came across a brochure for the White/Oliver 17-18 & 1955 series tractors. I remember picking this up off the brochure rack as a kid on one of those parts runs with dad. tried my best to convince him to trade in the super88 right then and there but he just wouldn't listen to a ten year old. we did aquire a 1655 several years later which i loved to drive. never drove a tractor from the 17-18-1955 series. my question is: the 1655 seems to get rave reviews from many of you reader as a great all around tractor. i agree but see that the 17-18-1955 series had hyd brakes with a parking brake. was this not a major upgrade feature for these tractors? would think it would make all-around operation more comfortable? was aware of the 1955's potential engine issues.

I own an Oliver 1555 and an 1855 . The brakes on the 1855 are hydaulically actuated and those on the 1555 and 1655 mechanically actuated . Both use dry disc brake pads . The 1855 brakes do not run in hydraulic oil . The 1555/1655 and 1855 use two disc pads per brake while I think the 1955 uses three pads per brake . The 1855 brakes are basically self adjusting and easier to brake with than those on the 1555/1655 . The 1855 also has a hydraulically actuated PTO while the PTOs on the 1555/1655 are started mechanically .

If I recall the original brakes on the first 1855,s were a little to quick. The was a modification to the brake line to correct this? jps

Todd- My thoughts on this would be to stick to your 1655 if you have it yet. The 17-1955 feature the 310 waukesha, and unless its properly maintained and rebuilt, its a ticking time bomb. The great thing with the 17-1955's is that the 6-354 perkins or the 5.9 cummins can be retrofitted into the tractor with a few changes/modifications. We own a 1755 with the 5.9 cummins, and I really like it, but after owning a 1950T with the famous 310 in it, and blowing up on us twice to boot, I dont think I will go with another 310 (sorry WFE) Just my thoughts, take them for they are worth....:)
