Oliver 2255 hydraulic cooler pump

I have a late model 2255 with the gerotor cooling pump behind the main hydraulic pump.My problem is an overheating hydraulic system. I tee'd into the cooler pump outlet line that goes up to the cooler.When started cold it has 110lbs. of pressure at idle and 2500 Rpm.After 10-15 minutes running it still has 110lbs. at 2500 Rpms but when pulled back to an idle (800 Rpm) it drops to an average of 45lbs.It oscillates badly form 60 to 30 lbs. If I crimp off the hose at the cooler to dead head the pump it still won't come up. Would that be a sign of a weak pump.But functioning relief valve?

Sounds like some good advice, Tim I also remember reading that you can attach a pointer to the end of the shaft "wobble plate" running through the pump, you can get some idea how the system is working by how many deg. arc. the shaft makes from full flow to a no flow condition, at that point the pump should be near cutoff, only having to make up for leakage. PS if anyone pulls a so so pump I am looking for one.

I guess I will throw my two cents worth in, may be all it's worth anyway, Your closed system is about the same as my 2-105, What indication are you getting that it's over heating? a closed system will run pretty hot normaly as it's maintaning 2500 or so psi at all times. any internal leaking will cause it to run hot, making it "work" harder, if it's the same as the 2-105 this would include, brakes,pto control,steering,lift, etc. I would think one indication that the cooler is working is if the cooler/lines are heating up, indicating flow.

Between my father and I we have 3 2255's Two early models with pump under radiator and One late with the gerotor,and it is the only one ever to have this problem.The overheat light will come on on the dash after working ground for about 3 hours (20 acres).The cooler pump outlet metal line and the entire hydraulic housing will get hot to the touch. It will steam if water from a garden hose is turned on it. It has been an ongoing issue that seems to be getting worse,with the spring temps coming up into the 80's. It also causes the engine to run VERY hot because the hot cooler in front of the radiator.This system was used on most larger late 55 series and early White model tractors anyone ever ran tests on them?

Tim, I would say your gerotor cooling pump is OK and that you have another high pressure leak in the system. If you have a flow-rater or a 3000 lb gauge that you can plug into the remote valve I would check the main relief valve setting vs. the system operating pressure. The way you do this is to put the gauge in the remote outlet and move the lever to put pressure on it. Tie the handle back to keep it from detenting. Bring the engine to operating speed and check the pressure on the gauge, it should be about 2200 psi. Then turn the compensator valve in, it's the large screwdriver slot facing forward on the hyd pump. The pressure should increase to about 2500 psi. That is the main relief valve setting. If it is not set higher than the operating pressure then the main relief will be constantly bypassing oil and causeing a heating problem. You could back off the compensator valve to lower the operating pressure below where the main is set. There should be a 200-300 psi differential between the two. There are shims in the main valve that over time wear and change the setting, causing the two pressures to be the same. You could also put your hand on the control valve body located under the pump and with the system cold run the tractor and if the it starts to heat there first then thats where you problem is at. That valve body is where the main relief is located. Good Luck, WB.

Hi Wrenchbender. I've discussed my 1855 hydraulic problems previously on this site, but you have mentioned one item that needs further explanation. As the guy above did, I hooked a guage to my outlet and turned the screw in on the unit attached to the pump. I did get the squealing noise, but also found my tractor to be wooking so hard, it was throwing black smoke. As a result, I backed the screw out to where it ran half way decent, but the hydraulics ran hot all summer. Did I not go far enough to cause the pump to kick out? I am planning on putting in a new pump this weekend, but I just want to make sure I am not missing something here. The new ones are soooo expensive. Thanks in advance.

I started and felt around to see what warmed up first, it seemed it was the pump head, then the oil cooler line to the front that get hot first.The cooler pump pressure would not go above 60 psi. while I was running it. Then I checked the pressure at the remote with the handle pulled back it was at 2200psi. I turned the compensator screw in and at 2400psi there was a squealing noise coming from that large valve block under the pump as the oil was bypassing.How thick and what size of a shim will it take do you think to get it up to 2500 psi.And will all the oil run out of the resevoir if I unscrew the bolt head?

Those pumps don't pump much preasure.Most likely your problem is with the other pump,its either leaking preasure inside itself or is not feathering destrokeing right.
