Oliver 60 electical questions

when i bought my oliver 60 it had a 12 volt battery on it. this does not necessarily mean that the system had been converted to 12 volts.

questions for the experts.

1. what size electrical system was built into my 1948 oliver 60 (sn: 624208) at the st. charles factory?? 6 volt, or 12 volt??

2. the tractor has a generator on it. how do i know whether or not that is a 6 or 12 volt generator??

3. how can i tell whether or not that generator is charging the battery?? i don't think it is since the battery will hold a charge, but always runs down after i drive it.

appreciate any insights which the experts here can give me.

All Oliver 60's came with a 6 volt system. Usually the generator has a the voltage on the tag that the manufacturer (Delco) puts on there. It might be covered with paint. If your charge gauge works it should tell you if the genereator is charging. Also the generator puts out a volt or so more than the battery (7-8 volts)when it is working. A digital multimeter can help you check voltage. My guess is you have a 12 volt battery with a 6 volt charging system. The 6v generator is only going to charge the battery to 6v and therefore pretty much drain the battery. Also you might want to check which coil you have. A 6v coil might not last too long with a 12v system. Good luck
