HELP with Oliver PTO

Help! I recently purchased an Oliver 1265 with a factory 1510 loader. The problem is, first of all, the loader will only work with the PTO lever engaged. The big problem though is that the clutch will not disengage the PTO shaft. This is really a problem when I'm trying to use a post hole auger. I don't know if I should try to adjust the PTO clutch or if there is a bigger problem. Also, as you would guess, with the clutch fully depressed, I can not engage the PTO lever without some serious grinding. Probably because the stupid clutch isn't disengaging! Any help or direction would be REALLY appreciated.

I don't have expirience with a 1265, but I do on 1365. If memory serves, the main clutch controled a power out put above the standard 540 shaft that ran the equivilent of a front pump used on other tractors. The regular PTO should be controled with what looks like an old hand brake lever under the dash, and as my mind like a streel seive recalls they recomended leaving it in the engaged position unless actually using PTO for work.

If my memory is correct the 1265 has a two stage clutch. How much free travel does it have? Should be about 1/2 in. May need adjusting if more than that. You should feel a slight increase in pedal effort at about 1/2 the pedal travel, thats when the PTO clutch starts to release, also check for an obstruction or interferance that could keep the pedal from moving all the way to the floor board, If all the above checks out then possibly the PTO clutch disc is rusted to the flywheel or pressure plate. Thanks, It does have a two stage clutch, I can feel when the trans clutch engages and disengages but, I don't feel anything there after. This tractor has 1850 hours on it and the previous owner kept incredible maintenance records, he greased everything, changed ALL fluids and filters at lease twice a year every year since it was new so I find it hard to imagine he would have let something like the PTO clutch to become rusted. Do you know of anyway I can check to see if it is rusted?

Check to see if there is an inspection plate or cover on the area around the fly wheel.If there is one you may be able to see some of the clutch components and action through the opening, It's been too long since I looked at one of those tractors but my memory tells me that there was a way to look at that area. Memory is fussy but if you cant feel the second stage clutch resistance aboutn half way down then your pto clutch fingers need adg.As your main clutch wears the pto fingers draw farther away.I think it is done with a feeler gauge and a thin wrench inside the pressure plate from under the tractor.

Thanks Harry, I have a maintenance manual for this tractor and that sounds pretty consistent with how they describe the PTO clutch adjustment. I was kind of hesitant to start messing with that if someone had any other great ideas but, so far, trying to adjust that clutch is sounding like to best thing to try yet. Like I said earlier though it just seems strange given the impressive maintenance the previous owner was perfoming on this tractor that he would have let something like this go for so long! I think the adjustments will be my Saturday project!
