My 1855 is getting air to the hydraulic system from the small return line that runs from the top of the steering unit and tee's into the line from the small pump above the injector. I cannot find a hole in the line and am questioning whether its the pump or somewhere else. How does the oil flow to the cooler up front? I have traced a line running from the valve spool console on the right side of the tractor, going to the cooler and then to the small pump. From there, the line from the pump is tee'd to the small return line that meets up at the side of the filter with a second larger line going into the front of the hydraulic resevoir unit almost in the middle of the unit. Which line is presure and which is return? Is it possible to not have oil flowing through these lines or is my system creating too much vacumm?? I already took the hose off between the filter and resevoir and could not find any blockage.

The small pump ciculates oil through the oil cooler. The suction or inlet should be the side with the tee, the small line is supposed to pull any air bubbles away from the filter head so air does not get into the main closed center pump. Oil should flow from the small pump to the cooler, from the cooler back to the valve bank on the RH side of the reservoir, where it is returned to the reservoir. Could be a bad seal on the cooling pump the is allowing air into the system or is the flow reversed through the cooler? ( lines reversed on the cooler pump) Hope this helps a little on diagnosing the problem.

Thanks Harry, we were using the tractor last fall and all of a sudden, the fan started to blow hydraulic oil over the left side of the engine. I thought it came from the pump back then. We took out the pump and found it to be worn, but put in new seals anyway. I now have clear plastic line going down to the hose that comes off the steering. All the oil, when there is some is going to the filter, not the other way. I wondered about the possible reversal of the hoses when my hired man had it apart. Is there a way to identify the in and out ports on the pump.

Shucks, it's been 30 years since I looked at one of those. I think it was a small Cessna gear pump. Possibly the ports may be marked "I" for inlet or suction and "P" for pressure, Looking from the rear, pulley on the front, if the shaft is on top, the pressure port is to the left. If it is mounted with the shaft with the pulley below the center of the pump, the "P" port is to the right.
Easier to sketch on paper than to describe. Good luck and keep us informed as to your progress.
