Over/Under Unit Noise

The over/under unit in my 1950 makes a knocking noise in overdrive under a light load and a howling noise under a heavy pull. The direct drive and the under drive work fine with no noise. There are no filings on the magnetic drain plug. The engine is bolted in tight and it is not the chain. What is the problem?

Some of the later 50 series did have three speeds as an option, I have an 1850 that has a factory three speed in it.

I agree with the other posts, if it is making noise like that something inside is starting to fail, could be bearings, the sprag clutch, or even the gears, it is hard to tell until you get into it. If I were you I would not run it anymore and get it pulled out and rebuilt. Normally you can rebuild and reseal a three speed for a few hundred dollars, I normally let my AgCo dealer do it for me, as it is rather time consuming rebuilding a three speed, and he doesnt charge me much more than I would have in it anyway.

Good luck

Aug, your 1950 has a three speed? To paraphrase my old doc. If it hurts when you do "that" just don't do "that", if there is no sign of other trouble don't run her in high. you have to split the machine or pull the motor to get the hyrdo. out. As the other post said, Shep will come in and set us all strait. I'm an amature for sure.

Sounds like you might have a bad bearing some where in the two speed. I had a 1650 with a similar problem. You are probably going to need to pull that long shaft and remove the whole unit. Shep will be probably be able to advise you better than I can. Good luck.

The gears in your planetary carrier might be starting to wear excessively. They are not that difficult to repair and are fairly simple. It might make some very expensive pieces if the gears/bearings fly apart.

I agree, if it just started knocking and howling then it will be less expensive to repair now than later. WB.
