I stopped at the boneyard, and they want $350 for a tub for my 1600. Does this price seem reasonable or a little inflated? I am still trying to get my brother to contact his buddy who is a welder by trade who claims to be able to weld anything, see if he would do it for a case of beer and the price of the rods. I'd still rather weld it, as I don't want to have to take it all off and apart to do the switch if I don't have to. Let me know what you guys think.

I am not as negative as some of the others, is this tractor used as a loader tractor? If it is then you need to be especially careful, but I have seen frames fixed before. I would try a mechanical repair or reinforcement to go along with the weld repair. This could be done with turnbuckles, or chain binder arrangement to take the strain off of the weld repair.

Know it's not what you want to hear, but I have to agree with others. Cast is a tough problem, and any weld fix would be temporary. I have pix and even video of what the disastrous result can be, but no scanner or way to show it. I don't recall exactly what we paid for the tub, but it was a few hundred bucks. If you decide to go this way, you could shop around some for price, but check it carefully. Good luck.

I would agree with the others, replace the frame. That is a good price for that frame, I normally pay more than that for 1850 Perkins frames but they are in more demand. You might be able to weld the frame for now and get by with it until fall so you can use the tractor this summer, but I think it will only be a temporary fix and you will need to replace the frame at some point, I just dont think a weld on that cast will last long term.

Don, I think it would the best to just get the new frame. My boss had his frame crack and break in two on his 2-70 White, and it was quite the mess. I think dropping 350 now is better then a new radiator and frame, and the loss of a tractor when the whole tractor does a split. My thoughts anyways....

I think you are wasting your time. Some "guy" who "welds anything" for a case of beer is not a certified welder, and a certified welder would tell you the chances of a successful weld in this case is zero.

He is a certified welder, just happens to also be a friend of my brother's. Maybe he would want more for it, but what the heck, I was just milling it over in my mind. The tractor never had any loader on it and never had any stress on the front end, other than pulling it out of the mud a few times, but that was never jerked or put under any extra stress.
