Friend of mine was wondering about the 1955 oliver tractor engine , which I believe to be the 310 , am I correct? If so , were all the 310 engines bad , or only the earlier ones? Seems like I remember reading/hearing that the late 310's were ok. Because of not having any personal experiences with this model , I have to rely on you experts. And thanks again for any advice/input you may have.

Yes, you are correct that it is the 310 turbocharged. Generally, the 1955 was better than the 1855 models prior to 1974. Beginning in 1974, the 1855s were basically a 1955 engine with the 1855 injection pump. So the late 1855s were better than earlier ones. All 1955s were basically the same. If I were in your friend's shoes and were buying this tractor without being able to diagnose its mechanical soundness, I would bid under the assumption that the motor should at least have new rod bearings and connecting rod capscrews, which is not a huge cost and fairly easily done. There is an earlier thread that talks about this engine, but basicly if this engine has had the updates with the bulkier pins and oiler cooler, it has the potential to be ok.
