1655 coupler chain

I need to put a new one on my 1655, is there a right way or wrong way regarding the cotter pin position. Long pin in front or in back or doesn't it make any difference, just wondering. thanks,Mark

The correct way they say is to put the long cotter pin in the back, toward the transmission and the short ones up front all facing the rotation of the chain. I have a hard time putting the long pin in the back so I normally put it in the front and have gotten along fine so far. Make sure you use the stainless steel pins that come with the chian and check your sprockets for wear and play before putting on a new chain. The sprocket on the three speed is fixed and solid and the transmission sprocket should only slide back and forth not up and down. Also make sure they are in alignment, that is the biggest cause of chain failure.

Chains are strange, I have put some on exactly as they say to and done everything right in the shop taking my time and a month or so later they come flying off. And then last January I had a chain come off pushing snow and the tractor was dead in a snow bank, I slapped the old chian back on real quick as it was getting dark, the pins just went in where ever I could get them to go, not correct, I lost one stainless one in the snow and put a regular steel long pin in, and it has been running great ever sence. I really didnt expect it to stay on very long, and have a new chain for it but what the heck.

I have also found the best way to hook the chains up is from under the tractor, in the heated shop if you can.

Thanks for the info, I have replaced this chain before and always wondered what was the correct way. Seems like its not really an easy job, hate laying under the tractor with arms extended putting it on, not as young as I used to be.I understood everything in your post except the part about the cotter pins facing the rotation of the shaft. Do you mean the closed end of the pin should lead in the direction that the shaft rotates? Thanks for the info, Mark

THE MAIN THING WITH THE CHAIN COUPLER IS TO HAVE THE HAVLES OF THE HUB ALININGED PROPERLY WHICH CAN BE ACHEIVED WITH A FEELER GAUGE.

Yes you have it, the head of the cotter pin should be in the direction of rotation so that it forces the pins in the hole and doesnt try to pull them out. I dont know how important that really is, I have put them in both ways and they seem to work, but that is the recommended way to do it.

I think the alignment of the sprockets is a lot more important to the chain life than the cotter pins or their placement.

I know its not an easy job, and the chains never let go in a good spot, always in the middle of the barnyard when your cleanin out, or in the middle of a snow drift near dark, never where you can just coast up to the shop.
