I recently bought a 1963 550 Diesel that I thought was in a little better condition than I suppose it really is. I'm not a mechanic but I've always wanted to own an Oliver since I was a kid and this one already will be needing radiator recore and possibly engine work. Unfortunately the seller bought at farm auction and didn't know much history. Getting quite a bit of blue smoke when cold that goes away after warms up. Any suggestions? thanks

Smoke when cold for a diesel is not at all unusial. Just a lack of combustion temp is all. If it clears up when warm your ok unless you smell coolent burning. Alot of idleing and low or no load running will make the smoke problem worse as diesels tend to load up and will form a black tarish substance in the exhost and also sicks up the rings. Put a good solid load on it for awhile every now and again. One thing to look for is wrist pin knock. Every diesel I've had apart needed new ones. Here too like the 310 there is one peice bushings available, A major improvement. If you need to these engines are one of the easy to rebuild there is. Just don't try to remove the fuel cells and damage them. Good luck
