Oliver 88 serial number

I have an Oliver 88 serial number 125264 c88c. I know from looking it up tht it is a1949 but I don't have a clue what the c's on either side of the 88 mean. I am sure they are there for a reason as the 77 I have doesn't have anything like that on it. Seems I have read on here that those things sometimes told the gear ratio f the tractor or something like that. Is this what it is??

You are correct, the c88c is the drive train code. It tells us which drive train the tractor had when shipped from the factory. Your tractor has a "special low" speed 1st and 3rd gears, other speeds are same as regular Row Crop.

Do you have a complete list of serial number suffix's that you could post? I have a 77 that has a c77d at the end of it's serial number.

Thanks! That would explain why this thing has so much power in low gear. I use it to pull some right now but plan on restoring it and probably using it in a year or so as it still has everything including hydralics on it. Is there a book or website or something that lists these codes? I would like to know what they are on other models also so if I happen to run across one at a good deal I will know as much as possible about it.
