Oliver 550 Alignment problems PLEASE HELP.

Hey guys Me and my dad need some help. We have a 550 in which has the natorious worn out front end. We ended up buying very nice used spindles (part # match the ones we removed). Put new bushings in, and new bearings and seals in the hubs. Tractor has the adjustable front end with manual steering. When reassembling yesterday we have a toe problem. the wheels are splayed out as sitting on the seat. If I were to guess it would be close to 15 degrees on both wheels. Now we did not change any of the tie rod lengths, however they are adjusted as short as possible. Meaning we cannot adjust in the toe. What is going on?? We have doulbe checked to make sure the correct spindle is on each side. In fact to confirm this we switched them and the problem doubles its self.

Our neighbor has a nice 550 so we went and looked at his. His tie rod lengths are about 48" end to end (overall) length. Ours are about 44". I looked in the parts manual and see there is one other link (mounts to spindle on top and tie rod fastens to it) available but I am unsure what if anything this would gain us. Did you switch the steering knuckles when you reassembled? Spindle to tie rod. They sould offset to the front of the tractor.

No we didn't switch anything at all. JUST the spindles are nice NOS. The keys appear to be in identical positions as the old spindles. We even swaped them from side to side and the splay got worse. Also the Tie rod lengths have not been changed at all. And they are as short as possible. The steering nuckles are pointing forward toward radiator. Thanks Joe

how much did you disasemble? how many truns does it take to go full left to full right? could the pitman arms on the steering box be in the wrong spot? Jake's info is correct. check the number of turns.

We took the bolts out of the tops of spindles, droped the spindles out, changed out bearings and seals and spindles. Resassembled. I realize the pure simplicity to this problem. But I and going nuts. Is there a possibility that the keys were cut differently just slightly to cause this even with the same casting Number as the old ones? Thanks Joe

Joe the parts book shows 2 differant part numbers for each side with a ajustable front, and 2 numbers for non adustable each side. 4 part numbers in all for each side. You may not have the same ones, but you can still use them. I would center your steering box by going full left to right counting the turns, and turn back half. Then remove your pitman arms, reinstall them so they are pointing to the back, (there are wide splines in 4 differant places on the output shafts) just in front of the tranmision cover. You than can ajust the tie rods.

I went and looked mine, check the pitman arms they sould both be to the rear went the wheels are strait ahead.The fromer owner may have reinstalled them on the wrong side after a repair. Its that or your steering box was reasmenbled wrong.

Joe, I think Don's on the right track. Measurement of the long rod[center to center] is 46" with 4 1/2" of tread showing, the shorter is 44 1/2" with 3" of thread exposed. the pitman arms in straight ahead position should be 3" to the rear of shaft the pitman arm is attached to. The pitman arm has 4 spots in which it will slide on 90-180-270-360 degrees. Also if the steering sector gear if removed it can easily be installed 1 tooth off. With the steering arms both pointing towards the radiator your problem has to be in the gear box to throw every thing out of wack. Good luck Jake

Joe the problem might be having the tie rods reversed, the rear pitman arm is about 3-4 in back of the front arm so there is a long and shorter tie rod. While the rods are off make sure the steering box gears are properly aligned. Turn the steering wheel from side to side should be 5 1/2 turns, turn back 2 3/4 at this point both pitman arms should be in the same position, the tie rods should drop right in. Good luck Jake
